Report Site Visit Tidal energy test at Temse bridge 19 Nov 2014 Reported by Roeland Notelé, projectengineer Waterwegen en Zeekanaal SITE VISIT 19 TH NOVEMBER 2014 INTRODUCTION Representatives of all the Pro-Tide project partners and sub-partners travelled to Antwerp (Belgium) for meetings from November This included a Partner Meeting, Joint study and Technical Research Group meeting. The project took the opportunity to undertake a site visit to the tidal test site of Temse Bridge to better understand tidal energy possibilities in the Sea Scheldt. The Scheldt is a river with a tidal part (Sea Scheldt) in Flanders, from the Dutch border, along Antwerp and Temse/Bornem, till Ghent. W&Z will test 3 different tidal turbines at the Scheldt Bridge in Temse/Bornem. During the visit the Aquascrew turbine was installed at a quay in Burcht and the turbine from Water2Energy (W2E) is installed in the river. A third turbine is in preparation and will be delivered by Blue Energy Canada. To reach the location of the turbine all delegates were taken to the pontoon at the Steenplein in the middle of Antwerp to board on a boat form W&Z. The boat took the delegates to the test site, in the middle of the Sea Scheldt at the Temse Bridge from where it was possible to see the turbine producing electricity. The lunch was on the boat and during the boat trip the delegates could observe the Scheldt river, the tide flow, the shipping traffic. After the lunch Roeland Notelé gives a summary of the project of W&Z in Pro-Tide, with a focus on the tidal tests in the Sea Scheldt. 5 In Burcht the turbine of Aquascrew was installed on a quay. 6 Aquascrew, 2 nd in line for the tidal tests, wants to test a Archimedes screw in the Sea Scheldt. Typical for the turbine is the increasing diameter which makes is very fish friendly. Mr. Joris Vanderveken from Aquascrew gave more information about the turbine. At Temse Bridge all delegates disembarked and could see the turbine of Water2Energy form the Pontoon. The turbine was installed in an accessible floating device. Mr Reinier Rijke gave more explanation about the technical details of this turbine. The turbine could be inspected 360. At the time of the site visit the flow was slowing down, so the turbine stopped generating electricity at 14h30. 7
