Leah SchankRoster # 18 Lesson Plan: Clark County GATE Program Lesson Objectives: Introduce the importance of Gifted and Talented education. 1.Express the need for GATE programs 2.Identify what makes a student gifted verses what makes a bright learner a.Do an activity 3.Teach the process of screening students for GATE in the Clark County School District. Explain what is to be expected for students who attend GATE program. 4.Introduce curriculums and projects used in the GATE Program. 5.Explain how the students are accessed while in the GATE Program. 6.Review for quiz on Clark County School District’s GATE Program. 7.Take the Quiz Materials/Equipment: 1.Gifted Student v. Bright Child activity board. 2.A series of informational handouts for us to go through together. 3.The students must have a pen to take their quiz at the end. 4.The quiz will be provided. Instruction: I will introduce the agenda. We will watch a short video introducing the need for Gifted and Talented Education. The class and I will do a gifted v. bright learner activity to explain the difference between them. I will explain the lesson that I have put together on a powerpoint. We will do a review as a class. Then the students will take their quiz Closure: 9 Review questions, and a quiz. Evaluation: The student’s interaction during the quiz and quiz scores will be a good indication as to how much of the information they retained. The quiz will be worth 10 points, and participation will be worth 10 points. Connections:If the students participate, then I will know that they are actively trying to understand the information. For this I will give a participation grade worth 10 points.  Context: I will introduce the necessity for Gifted and Talented programs for gifted students. I aim to help these future teachers identify a gifted learner by introducing them to gifted characteristics. I will touch briefly on the range of availability for different levels of gifted learning within TAGS (90-97th percentile) and GATE (98th percentile) and highly gifted in the Clark County School District. Then I will go over curriculum and introduce the class to expectations, curriculum and assessments within the program. Resources: Youtube video, testing information, assessment charts, and acceptance letter. Reflection and Analysis: Go over how the students did on test, and ask them if there were any areas that they felt unsure about. Discuss some of the key points with the student and take note as to how well the student retained the information. If the student is struggling with a concept, reinstate the objective. Follow up: Ask students to come up with an appropriate assignment for these gifted learners using the expectations and grading components listed. Meet with students and see if they are grasping the idea.  Works Cited Hunter, Julie. “GATE program information” 16 Nov. 2017. jswhite@interact.ccsd.net “Teaching Gifted Students.” YouTube   , YouTube, 18 Nov. 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ur64bToMpv4.
