From the University Chaplain… A New Beginning Well here we are, and it is amazing! There is a great fervor and excitement on our campus as we begin a new year and a new era. The foundation of Franciscan is that it has the distinctive charism to find a new beginning when and where it is needed. This is a specific manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the life of Franciscan. The starting point for the life of Franciscan is that God is placed at the center. Not academics or programs or money or personages, but God and Him alone. We have, as our Charism, the place of turning as a collective community, to Jesus and His light and Love. The truth of our life is revealed in this turning, which we know as ongoing conversion, which is our joy. It is that joy which is the trademark here and it has always been for this era and beyond. Fr. Jonathan St. Andre, TOR and Franciscan alum, class of ’96, has said, “I was visiting the campus (back in the early 90’s) with no real intention to come here, but it all changed because of the warmth and friendliness of the campus.” He went on to talk about the genuineness of the joy he experienced in the midst of his time as a student. Fr. Jonathan TOR now serves his alma mater as Vice President of Franciscan Life. We have just celebrated the inauguration of the seventh presidency of Franciscan, Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR. He comes with a unique perspective being the first president, in our young university’s history, to be a graduate. He knows Franciscan at its heart and has set his sight on that renewal of that heart, and it has definitively begun. A long-time friend of the university once told me that ‘Franciscan is bigger than itself’ meaning that we don’t exist for ourselves and that our reach in the world is far beyond our campus. If we look in-depth at salvation history, we can see God often picks one particular point to begin his work. Whether that was Abraham, our father in faith, who became a great nation, or the Blessed Virgin Mary who was chosen to be the gateway by which God entered the world. It was from these humble beginnings that the whole world changed in a way that no one could have ever foreseen. Let us rejoice in this moment as a new beginning, one that is by all measures destined for glory. May the Lord give you Peace! Fr. Shawn Roberson, TOR READINGS OF THE WEEK: Vocation Fair to Host an Array of Diocesan and Religious Orders • 6 Sun: 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time —Hb 1:2-3; 2:2-4/2 Tm 1:6-8, 13-14/Lk 17:5-10. • 7 Mon: Our Lady of the Rosary—Jon 1:1-2:1, 11/Lk 10:25-37. • 8 Tue: Weekday—Jon 3:1-10/Lk 10:38-42. • 9 Wed: Weekday— Jon 4:1-11/Lk 11:1-4. • 10 Thurs: Weekday— Mal 3:13-20b/Lk 11:5-13. • 11 Fri: Weekday—Jl 1:13-15, 2:1-2/Lk 11:15-26. • 12 Sat: Weekday—Jl 4:12-21/Lk 11:27-28.
