viaggio nomadic journeys Mongolia viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences So why Mongolia for our first viaggio nomadic journey? Simple, it meets the criteria of an exceptional destination with extraordinary experiences providing our guests with the opportunity of truly having unique experiences in a destination visited, in this style, by very few. We have partnered with Jan Wigsten, co-owner of 360° Mongolia, to create this once-in-a- lifetime viaggio nomadic journey in a country which Jan has enjoyed and experienced for 27 years. We venture to different regions of Mongolia discovering the unique nomadic culture of the people, see life as they live it and we get to view the wildlife along the way all within breathtaking scenery. Utilising various modes of transport and accommodation, we will discover the regions from the North to the South and from East to West. This viaggio nomadic journey will be something we will all recall and marvel at in the years to come.
I invite you to join me on what will be a very special journey. Lance Green GLOBAL TRAVELER - FOUNDER/OWNER viaggio exceptional destinations, extraordinary experiences viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences our partner Partnering with an experienced company is important when venturing into a new destination. Experience counts for everything. Jan Wigsten, co-founder of 360° Mongolia with over 27 years of experience visiting and working in Mongolia, in conjunction with Lance’s desire to create a unique viaggio nomadic journey, has designed this extraordinary bespoke experience to discover Mongolia. 360° Mongolia is more of a glamping style luxury travel experience, which will bring us closer to the Mongolian nomads out in the wilderness. However please rest assured that our itinerary will consist of both glamping and hotel stays. 360° Mongolia’s approach to travel in Mongolia has always focused on the places where they have developed long term partnerships with local communities and conservation initiatives. These favourite destinations have what can only be described as 360° landscapes with unspoiled views in every direction – it’s an immersive experience in another world. To visit the remote destinations in comfort and style, they have developed a unique travel philosophy utilising small mobile private camps, complete with well-appointed traditional Mongolian gers (yurt). 360° Mongolia have established several private airstrips allowing direct Cessna flights to and between many of their remote camps. At the camps you will sleep in a traditional Mongolian ger, simply but stylishly decorated with colourful Mongolian crafts, furnished with comfortable beds and full bedding. You will dine in a separate dining ger, or traditional Mongolian marquee style tent. Compost style toilets, and a safari style shower are also set up in traditional Mongolian tents. Our camp entourage always includes skilled cooks and a camp host or hostess. On relocation days the entire camp can be dismantled, packed onto our support vehicles and set up again in the new location. We intersperse our camp stays with nights in hotels, please read the full itinerary to discover all the fascinating details of this journey. viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences viaggio nomadic journey Mongolia viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences Mongolia viaggio nomadic journey summary July / August 2020 DESTINATION ACCOMMODATION DATES NIGHTS MEALS* Seoul Park Hyatt (or similar) 02 - 04 July 2n B Mongolia Ulaanbaatar 04 - 07 July 3n B,L,D Deluun - Buyant River 360° Wilderness Ger Camp 07 - 10 July 3n B,L,D Hovd Steppe Hotel 10 - 12 July 2n B,L,D Dörgön Lake 360° Wilderness Ger Camp 12 - 15 July 3n B,L,D Hovd Steppe Hotel 15 - 16 July 1n B,L,D Hui Dolen Hudag HS Khan Ger Resort 16 - 18 July 2n B,L,D Hövsgöl River Canyon 360° Wilderness Ger Camp 18 - 21 July 3n B,L,D Ulaanbaatar Shangri-la Hotel 21 - 23 July 2n B,L,D Upper Tuul River 360° Wilderness Ger Camp 23 - 24 July 1n B,L,D Baruun Bayan 360° Wilderness Ger Camp 24 - 26 July 2n B,L,D Jalman Meadows Jalman Meadows Ger Camp 26 - 28 July 2n B,L,D Ulaanbaatar Shangri-la Hotel 28 - 29 July 1n B,D Seoul Four Seasons (or similar) 29 - 01 Aug 3n B,D *MEALS - REFER TO DAILY ITINERARY FOR MEAL INCLUSION DETAILS viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences 360° Wilderness Ger Camp 360° Wilderness Ger Camps are mobile.  They are collapsible five-star pop-up camps which allows deployment anywhere in Mongolia.   The private stylish camps are loaded onto a truck or on to a caravan of yak or camel carts.  Each camp site is carefully chosen, with 360° landscape views, next to a nomadic family or anywhere in the great Mongolian void.  We may move on foot or by camel or horseback, through the landscapes with the camp folded. viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences WED 08 JUL : HÖKH SERKHIIN NURUU NATIONAL PARK Our morning excursion will be on foot up the Ikh Yamaat (Big Goat) Valley where, with luck, we can see hundreds of Siberian Ibex (Capra sibirica). The Argali Sheep (Ovis ammon) is less numerous, but it is the largest wild sheep in the world. These are prey animals to Snow Leopards (Panthera uncia). The Altai Research Institute, and Dr Barry Rosenbaum, have conducted holistic wildlife research here for a decade. Today we are likely to have the first encounter with one of the many famous eagle hunters of the area. If we are fortunate, the ewes of Argali Sheep gather in herds on the plains below the mountains by the hundreds, with their newborns. Accommodation : 360° Wilderness Ger Camp
Meals : B.L.D THR 09 JUL : CHIGERTEI NATIONAL PARK We drive for just 1-2 hours, upstream along the Buyant and Chigertei Rivers passing the Chigertei Lake. We will reach the summer highland pastures of Kazakh nomads near the main ridge of the Altai Mountains, which marks the border with Xinjiang China. There is always something going on herding sheep and goats. The Kazakhs are sunni muslims. Unlike Kazakhstan proper, here they remain as nomadic pastoralist’s. Some are prominent eagle hunters, who will show up at the eagle festival. Chigertei National Park is bordering with KekeTuoHai National Park on the China side. The so-called Yosemite of China.
Camera traps here are for the on-going research on Wolverines (Gulo gulo). Camera traps will capture images also of livestock, birds, Wolves (Canis lupus) and the nocturnal Pallas’s Cats (Felis manul). Evidence of the Scythians and many later cultures is expressed through the numerous archaeological remains such as kurgans (grave mounds) and Deer Stones. Accommodation : 360° Wilderness Ger Camp
Meals : B.L.D FRI 10 JUL : TO HOVD Today we pack up and drive 4-5 hours to Hovd Province. We make our way out of Altai proper, where the majority are Mongols. Hovd is a small multi-ethnic town of Halkh Mongols, Myangad Mongols and Kazakhs . . . which is why it has both Buddhist temples and a mosque as well as an interesting local museum. Hovd also has the only university in west Mongolia and there are markets here to explore. Accommodation : Steppe Hotel Meals : B.L.D viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences SAT 11 JUL : RURAL NAADAM GAMES Today we plan to drive out of town to the nearby communities of Buyant, Duut Mankhan, Chandman or Dörgön, to experience the Naadam Games of Mongol wrestling and horse racing. People will dress up in their best attire as entire communities gather. Also community members in the diaspora, such as residents in Ulaanbaatar or Hovd will have come to be with their kin. Nomads have trained horses for galloping races of up to 32km. The children, aged 4 to 12 years old are the jockeys. Here parents and uncles will have their equestrian training skills put to the test. Both shame and fame will prevail! Accommodation : Steppe Hotel Meals : B.L.D SUN 12 JUL : HOVD NAADAM GAMES & TO DÖRGÖN LAKE As Hovd is the provincial capital it will gather the competitors from the entire province. Some wrestlers and horse trainers will have come here all the way from the Dzungarian Gobi, on the China-Xinjiang border. The games in Hovd also include archery, three manly games practiced since medieval times, during the hey-day of the Mongol Empire. Mid-afternoon we will depart for Khar Us Nuur National Park, driving through the park to Dörgön Lake. Accommodation : 360° Wilderness Ger Camp
Meals : B.L.D Please note : At the time of publication the exact schedule for July 10-12 was not able to be confirmed due to the final schedule of some activities being unclear for 2020. Schedule may have to be altered. viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences MON 13 JUL : DÖRGÖN LAKE. We will explore the far side of Khar Us Nuur National Park. This is the Great Lakes basin, into which all rivers flow. There are both salt water and fresh water lakes on the West Gobi landscape. Our private camp is set up on the shores of Dörgön Lake at Mongol Sands, the longest sand dunes of Mongolia. Usually small herds of the rare Saiga Antelope (Saiga tatarica Mongolica) are seen in the distance on the Dörgön Plains. Near our camp is the large and unique lakeside ovoo (sacred cairn) called Janjin Ovoo. Let the lake entice you with a refreshing bath and/or swim during your time here. Accommodation : 360° Wilderness Ger Camp
Meals : B.L.D TUE 14 JUL : CAMEL RIDE AT MONGOL SANDS Today we will start out on a spectacular camel ride across the sand beaches of Dörgön Lake. Mongol Sands are the longest sand dunes in Mongolia, along the Zavkhan River and ends on the beaches of Dörgön Lake. The Mongolian Riviera if you like. In the distance across the blue surface of the lake we can see the Jargalant Hairkhan Mountain, often snow-capped into July. Among the seabird species in the West Gobi desert environment are gulls, cormorants, divers and ducks. Campers may also observe pure desert species such as congregations of Pallas’s Sandgrouse (Syrrhaptes paradoxus). These birds often descend here to drink and enjoy the water, and carry water to their young in their plumage. Accommodation : 360° Wilderness Ger Camp
Meals : B.L.D viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences WED 15 JUL : TO HOVD After three lakeside overnights, we now return across the northern part of the Dörgön Dörgön plains, again with the opportunity to spot small herds of Saiga Antelopes (Saiga tatarica mongolica) on the prairie. The Saiga is a mammal which has survived and adapted since the warmer bronze age climate.
Before arriving back in the town of Hovd, we will pass Chandmani village, where locals claim throat singing originates. We will continue on another route around Jargalant Hairkhan, to see the lake shore of Khas Us Lake, where the largest reedbeds of Central Asia are located. Water birds are plentiful here. Local herders will have their livestock and yurts on either side of the mountain. Accommodation : Steppe Hotel Meals : B.L.D THR 16 JUL : TO HUI DOLOON HUDAG, NEAR ULAANBAATAR We will transfer to the nearby airport and fly east to Ulaanbaatar (2-3 hours). Upon arrival our transfer will be approximately one hour to the Hui Doloon Hudag plains, to the west of the city. Hui Doloon Hudag is where the famous horse races take place in July. We will enjoy very large modernized posh gers, with windows and a terrace. The evening is at your leisure. Accommodation HS Khaan Ger Resort Meals : B.D FRI 17 JUL : HUSTAI NATIONAL PARK Today, we drive for less than an hour south to Hustai, the west side of the national park and meet with herders and community members. We will enjoy a local lunch of traditional buuz and hushuur hdmeere, prepared by the hosts, who are partners in conservation work at Hustai. After lunch we continue the drive to the centre of the park to do a game drive viewing Wapiti Deer (Cervus canadensis) and Przewalskii Horses (Equus ferus przewalskii), the latter called Takhi in the Mongol language. The Takhi has a remarkable story here, as this truly wild horse is more related to zebras than horses. These beautiful animals are not ridable and were nearly extinct in the 1960s. The Takhi population in Mongolia today, is the result of an arrangement from zoo parks across the world, to release them in their homeland. We will have dinner at Hustai National Park restaurant, before returning to Hui Doloon Hudag. Accommodation HS Khaan Ger Resort Meals : B.L.D viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences viaggio exceptional destinations extraordinary experiences SAT 18 JUL : TO HÖVSGÖL RIVER CANYON VIA MÖRÖN We will transfer to the airport for a 1½ hour domestic flight to Mörön/MXV. The town is small yet is still the largest town of Hövsgöl province. After arrival we board the Landcruisers and drive 20kms west to Uuchigin Övör, the famous standing Deer Stones, dated back to between the 7th-9th centuries A.D. The drive to Hövsöl River Canyon takes about three hours, depending upon the number of photo stops. The drive is utterly beautiful. You pass many nomads living in gers along the steppe. As you near the river, the topography becomes much more rugged and defined by larch and birch trees. Eventually, you will wind your way down through the mountains to one of our secluded 360° river ger camps. Here you will have a great dinner and prepare for the next day’s adventure. Accommodation : 360° Wilderness Ger Camp
Meals : B.L.D SUN 19 - MON 20 JUL : FLOATING THROUGH THE CANYONS For the next two days, we will be floating through an absolutely stunning canyon. It is impressive with granite and limestone cliffs rising vertically hundreds of meters above the wild river. There are a number of class II and a few class III rapids. At high water, it can be quite exciting. Our team of professional river guides use top of the line, US manufactured rafts equipped with all the safety gear you’d expect on a well-outfitted river journey. Traveler's have the option of participating in a “paddle” boat, rowing their own inflatable kayak, or sitting back and enjoying the ride while the guides take the oars. Each day on the river, you and your guides float into a new camp. There is no road access into the canyons except for the first and last day for drop off and pick up. The floats are half days, to allow time to stop for photos stream-side, as well as hiking up to the scenic look out points, for stunning landscape images. Imagine all the amenities of an African tented safari camp in the middle of remote Mongolia. Three full days of great hospitality and glorious scenery. Accommodation : 360° Wilderness Ger Camp
