Commission has been glad to welcome to Malaysia NgÞ mihi a group of New|Zealand veterans of the Emergency and Confrontation - including one nurse who visited the hospital at Terendak Camp a few decades after she served there. It was Hunter Nottage special to join the veterans from New Zealand, Australia, the New|Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia United Kingdom and Malaysia for a commemoration service at Heroes Memorial Park in Kuching. The New Zealanders then marched in August’s Merdeka Day Parade while the other veterans visited other parts of Malaysia. |Through these moving moments, it was a chance to reƃect on our shared history supporting Malaysia in times of need. We’ve also been glad this past month to support a New|Zealand MÞori Ƃlm director, Paula Whetu ,ones, who visited Malaysia to lead a Ƃlm-making workshop as part of the 10th Kota Kinabalu International Film Festival.| This was our second year supporting the Film Festival, and it was great to see it showcasing Ƃlms and Ƃlmmakers from all around the world, including New|Zealand. It was wonderful for us at the High Commission to hear about the connections which Paula was able to make with local artists and Ƃlmmakers, and to see ties being built between our two countries’ creative industries. We’re eagerly looking forward to seeing what projects come out of her visit. Another big project of this past month has been the visit of the New|Zealand Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier and Assistant Ombudsman Emma Leach. Both were here on the invitation of the Malaysian Government to talk about their roles, as part of Malaysia’s plans to implement its own ofƂce. |The discussions with Malaysian civil servants, Members of Parliament and civil society organisations were in-depth and warm. We were happy to share our experience in support of Malaysian initiatives to boost fairness and accountability.| This was followed by the 12th ASEAN - Australia - New Zealand dialogue. More on that in the next MANZA edition! All in all, it’s been a great past two months for the team here at the High Commission - not to mention, all the excitement around the start of this year’s Rugby World Cup! We’ll be looking forward to clear air in the months ahead, not to mention MANZA 5 — MANZA NEWS Battle of the brains at MANZA’s first trivia night Story by Sandy Pike M ANZA held its Ƃrst Trivia Night Saturday, 7th September, and it was a sell out and a resounding success! Thank you to everyone who contributed to a great night, from our wonderful 3uiz Master, and Events Co-ordinator, Carmel, who organised the whole evening everyone who helped with the organisation, and especially to all our guests who came and made the night such fun. On arrival we were greeted with stunning 0 degree views of Kuala Lumpur from the top of Sentral Residences (albeit slightly marred by the persistent haze) and that was reason enough to be there! After quenching our thirst and enjoying a satisfying buffet dinner, it was heads down, pens in hand, concentrating on the questions being Ƃred out by Carmel. They were certainly no walk in the park! We were tested round by round on topics such as history, movies and television, pƂnd the linkq and the particularly tricky audio round where eager ears attempted to identify songs from the Ƃrst Ƃve seconds. One of MANZA’s central reasons for existence is to help worthy charities in Malaysia and this evening we were so proud to raise RM1,500 to go towards buying hearing aids for under-privileged, hearing-impaired children in Malaysia. Thank you so much to the enormous generosity of everyone who attended and bought rafƃe tickets or donated to the cause. It makes all the hard work worthwhile. Despite Ƃerce competition and teams being neck and neck through the night, it was The Warriors Team that took Ƃrst prize! Congratulations on fantastic work ladies! They were followed in close second place by The Trivial Sharks and third place went to the Multiple Scoregasms (the writer of this brief account of the night was on this table and has to confess it was a two-woman team that almost single-handedly carried us to this prestigious third place! Thank you Lisa and Georgina!) After another action-packed late night the tired but happy competitors made their way back down to the ground ƃoor and headed home. See you all at the next Trivia Night for what is sure to be another epic battle! 6 MANZA MANZA 7 8 MANZA — MANZA NEWS KL Intersociety Mingle by Georgina Scambler O n 4 September MANZA was delighted to host the annual inter-society mingle at MANZA House, a unique opportunity for executive committee members from expat associations and societies to come together and share their successes and challenges throughout the year. The gathering included representatives from 10 associations across Kuala Lumpur, who were each given a strictly timed seven minutes to speak about their association. Some of these associations have been active for over 100 years, and have members from up to 37 different nationalities. MANZA was also honoured to welcome Vice Consul Karen Song from the British High Commission and Bill Cooper from TEG Media. It was fascinating for all attendees to learn about the differences and similarities between our organisations, and share our goals and plans for the coming year. It was evident that despite our differences in size and scale, many of the challenges facing expat organisations are shared, particularly the difƂculty of making large scale events Ƃnancially viable in the current economic climate. Representatives discussed the possibility of joining forces on future events and working together to ensure we are not competing for the same attendees and sponsors. In order to achieve this goal, we agreed that it is important for all societies to share our event calendars and support each others’ events throughout the year. It was heartening to see the strong spirit of cooperation and collaboration between expats from all over the world. With the formal part of the evening wrapped up around 9pm, the sharing of ideas continued with drinks and a light buffet dinner. MANZA would like to thank Peter Pike for MC-ing and keeping all speakers on track, our hard-working committee for organising the event, and the representatives from all societies who attended on short notice. We now look forward to the 2020 event to be hosted by the Royal Society of St George. IJN is recognised as one of the leading cardiovascular and thoracic centres in Asia, and on 11 September a group of TEG guests was fortunate to learn all about how IJN provides the most advanced heart treatment in Malaysia. TEG Media hosted the informative coffee morning and networking event in conjunction with the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) at the newly revamped Oakwood Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Guests were welcomed by Oakwood’s General Manager Ramesh Ronald and treated to tea and coffee as they heard about Oakwood’s ever-growing presence in Asia. Originally established in the United States as a corporate housing company, Oakwood now has 40 properties in Asia including apartments, suites, studios and hotels, with their second Malaysian property due to open in two years. Ramesh was followed by MHTC Senior Executive Developmental and Local Marketing, Mr Mohd. Khairurrijal, who spoke about how MHTC helps visitors to the country wade through the wealth of information about healthcare in Malaysia and identify the best providers of medical care. Keynote speaker for the day was the highly entertaining Dr Aslannif Roslan, IJN Cardiologist, Internal Medicine Specialist and Chairman of Society of Cardiac Imaging, Malaysia. With a combination of easy to understand slides, personal anecdotes and case studies, Dr Roslan 14 MANZA provided some background on IJN and why they are the best option for local and expats for heart care. IJN has 19 cardiologists and 18 cardio-thoracic surgeons - more than anywhere else in Malaysia - meaning more brain power and the best possible treatment. IJN is also a training institute, and has two cardiologists, two cardio-thoracic surgeons and two anesthetists on call 24/7, providing patients with access to cutting edge technology. Dr Roslan explained how to recognise the symptoms of heart failure, the different types and causes of heart failure, and how IJN uses cardiac imaging to understand heart failure and determine the best course of treatment. IJN prides itself on providing an ECG to patients within Ƃve minutes of arrival at IJN, giving patients with heart failure the best possible chance of survival and minimising permanent damage to the heart muscle. A number of fascinating case studies provided attendees with unique insight into different types of heart problems faced by cardiologists at IJN and how they were effectively treated. Guests were given ample opportunity to ask questions and Dr Roslan’s extensive knowledge, openness, and engaging personality were greatly appreciated by all who attended. The networking and discussion on how we can all love our hearts continued over a light buffet brunch, and two lucky guests left with lucky door prizes generously provided by Oakwood Hotel.
